Alas, neither Google or Yahoo! are up to date for this area -- but unbelievably, MapQuest knows where High Knob is! You can get a map and general directions by following this link. That being said, we'll take it from NC107.

If you're headed south from Sylva on NC107 [which is actually 107 East at this point] , you'll want to go about nine miles, passing the university and local school complex. You'll follow this along with the river until you get to the 'Moonshine Mini Mart', a BP station on your right; directly across on the left is the entrance to Caney Fork Road. Caney Fork winds more than a bit, but stays coherent; you'll be on it for about ten or eleven miles, until it changes to dirt. Once you hit the dirt section [and engage four wheel drive] your first right will be a switchback; this is the beginning of 'High Knob Road'. As you climb the first bit, you'll find a house on your left [this is our nearest part-time neighbor] and pass through an open Forest Service gate. Continue on [and up] High Knob Road for approximately 2.5 miles; the first large, easy-to-enter switchback at that point is our driveway which can be easily identified by a secured cattle gate.

Directions headed north on NC107 are the same, except that you'll be turning right on Caney Fork and the 'Moonshine' will be on the left.

The property is located at the very end of what is known as 'The Caney Fork Community'. Although Caney Fork isn't recognized as an incorporated township, the locals have a bond all their own. The community is made up of farmers, local workers and university staff & students. They have their own fire department, community center and churches; the road itself follows a winding and active stream. They're liable to throw a picnic at a moment's notice -- and even as remote as we are, they showed up with a welcoming committee.

Cullowhee, although it is populated and on the map, is a bucolic little burg of about 4,000 people with a few local shops, restaurants and housing -- and, of course, post office. Although our address is there, we admittedly do get most of our supplies and the like from Sylva.

Sylva, although its population is technically smaller than Cullowhee, has an active Main Street and plays host to Western Carolina University -- and so has all the support services seemingly necessary to support the college. And, since Highway 107 runs straight through it, here's where you'll find the most convenient grocery store [and Sylva is wet, so you can get hooch], health food stores, Wal-Mart and Lowe's, along with the seemingly obligatory strip of cell phone and fast food franchises. It also sports a great Irish Tiki bar.
